The 'Do's and Don'ts' of mulching trees
This is a DON'T!
When I arrived at a large office building yesterday, I couldn't believe my eyes! Oh, the horror. It took my breath away when I saw how these trees had been mulched. I could just feel the trees rotting and suffocating. Mulching trees like this leads to the decline in the tree’s health, and quite possibly death! It made me so sad.
Follow these tree mulching 'DO's and DON'Ts':
DO remove any grass or weeds around your tree.
DON’T let mulch touch the tree trunk or lay on top of the root ball
DON’T ever pile mulch too high! No more than 4" deep around your tree
DO Expose the root flair as seen in the photo below.
Why mulch trees?
It is very helpful and beneficial to mulch newly planted and mature trees.
Mulch keeps the soil warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Mulch holds in the moisture for the roots, so you do not have to water as often.
Mulch deters the growth of weeds and grass that compete for the tree’s water.
Mulch protects the tree from lawnmower and weed eater damage.
YARDSPELL RECOMMENDATION:
We recommend a hardwood mulch that will break down over time and act as a slow released fertilizer.
